Weekend Project – Blanket Ladder

A few weekends ago I tackled a new project in the home decor department, a blanket ladder. I fell in love with a blanket ladder at Boston Interiors a few years ago, but I didn’t fall in love with the price. It was a little out of my budget for something that holds blankets. I honestly forgot about wanting one. Thankfully there’s Pinterest to remind you of all the things you love, want to do, and want to create.

A blanket ladder popped up on my Pinterest news feed just the other day. Cue all the feelings about wanting a blanket ladder again. I immediately started researching tutorials. I found this one here that caught my eye. Now if only the directions were as appealing as the ladder itself. That’s always the real question – is the tutorial easy to follow?

The Tutorial & Process

The tutorial seemed easy enough as I glanced over the materials and tools check list. Tools – check. For the materials I almost always research if the Home Depot near me has them in stock and their respective prices. Materials in stock – check. I reviewed the tutorial one more time before heading off to the store to purchase materials because I was pretty confident I could tackle this diy blanket ladder.

My plan was to attempt the blanket ladder on a Sunday and really hoped that I would be able to complete the project in one day without any snafus. Sunday came and I took all the measurements, cut, sanded, and stained the wood, and assembled the ladder – all in one day! It was really that easy even for someone who is terrible at reading a tape measure!

Creating in progress. Some tools and equipment needed to complete the blanket ladder.

Final Thoughts

Here is my final thoughts on my completed diy blanket ladder and the tutorial. I am so pleased with how the ladder turned out and how easy the tutorial was to follow. I am by no means an expert wood worker but it was definitely user friendly. She really explained things well and gave some good tips for creating the ladder. The ladder took less than 2 hours to make not including the dry time for the stain.

I used Varathane wood stain in Briarsmoke. You can purchase the stain here. It might be my new favorite stain color. I really love working with this brand of stain because of how quickly it dries. You can begin working on your project again in as little as one hour. I also made the executive decision to stain all of my pieces before assembling the ladder. I recommend doing this step if you want to avoid trying to get the stain in all the nooks and crannies when the ladder is assembled, but you can do it either way.

I’m so thankful I stumbled across Angela’s DIY Blanket Ladder. I really enjoyed making this project and it was super affordable. Blanket ladders add a nice decorative touch and unique way to store your throw blankets. It’s the perfect addition to our home.
